Galangal is an East Asian tropical shrub with lance-like leaves, iris-like flowers, and reddish brown, woody rhizomes. It grows mainly in the Himalayas and Southwest India. Galangal is referred to as the spice of life. The name galangal is derived from the Arabic khawlanjan. Galangal is an important herb in Saudi Arabia.

Sensory properties:

The root of the galangal has a pungent bitter flavor. Galangal tastes more like pepper than ginger.

Soothing qualities:

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses galangal in formulas to treat digestive problems. Galangal root is used to stimulate the release of gastric juices to assist digestion. It relieves bloating, constipation, sluggish digestion, and gas.

Drink galangal as a hot beverage to benefit from its soothing qualities. Boil a cup’s worth of water and add a bit of galangal in it. Let it boil for a minute then infuse it for five minutes, you can add a small cinnamon stick, two cloves, and a whole caraway seed to the mixture to keep you warm.

Note that galangal root inhibits the release and action of pancreatic lipase, so don't take both galangal and digestive enzymes.
